Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment proven safe and effective for a number of diseases and conditions. It is administered using hyperbaric chambers, in which the patients safely breathe 100% oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. HBOT is effective in treating hypoxia, or low levels of oxygen in tissue, which is a common problem in all chronic wounds. The therapy increases the oxygen concentration around the wound area, resulting in formation of new blood vessels. HBOT allows stem cells to mobilize, white blood cell activity to increase, and stimulates growth factors and other cells important for the growth of new skin forming cells helping heal the wound. Hyperbaric oxygen can be used to treat problem wounds, including diabetic wounds, compromised skin grafts and flaps, tissue infection, crush injuries, and thermal burns.
